Descending the Whaligoe Steps

For visitors to the north of Scotland, finding tucked-away experiences and little-known places can make a break in Scotland even more memorable. So taking some time to visit the Whaligoe Steps means that not only will you visit a site few people get to enjoy, you’ll be able to explore first hand the history of the people who once lived here.

Using the steps

Taking your first few steps down this winding path is going to be unforgettable. Of course there are stunning views out over the North Sea but right now, perhaps focus on your feet! The steps can be different sizes and some are narrower than other. The steps are well maintained, however sturdy footwear is always recommended. And take your time – there’s no rush to go down or up. It’s an experience to enjoy, and imagine walking where men and women walked hundreds of years ago.

What remains of the harbour can be explored at the bottom. This sheltered cove is a great place to stop and have a bite to eat. It’s great for birdwatching too. Outside peak season is the best time to really enjoy the Whaligoe Steps, as it is quieter and fewer people using them.

What are the Whaligoe Steps?

The Whaligoe Steps are made up of 365 stone steps that descend a steep cliff face to a small natural harbour. Well, we say 365, but some people count as few as 320. So if you visit, make sure to make up your own mind! The steps were carved into rock in the 18th century as a way to gain access to what was then a rather busy fishing port. Fisherwomen would carry their baskets, filled to the brim with freshly caught herring up the steps, up and down all day whatever the weather. These days, we definitely don’t recommend giving the steps a go if it’s terribly rainy or windy.

Testimonials

The hotel was well located, with ample parking and easy to find. All the staff were lovely and welcoming. It had a nice outside area and lots of lovely common spaces – including a library area and both a reception/lounge and bar. Our triple en-suite room was very clean, beds comfy and excellent value for money. Breakfast was included in the price, and had both a continental and cooked to order options- both of which was great. The evening of our stay we had dinner in the restaurant part of the lounge bar’ (not the Beat 4 restaurant) however the food was still hearty and delicious, the setting was nice and prices were very reasonable. Couldn’t fault it!
