Family activities along the NC500

There are few more stunning roadtrips than the North Coast 500 (NC500) in Scotland. Taking in some of the most remarkable and rugged coastal views possible, it winds itself through 516 miles of one breathtaking landscape after another. It is also a fantastic journey to take kids, with plenty to explore and keep their curious minds active. Here are some tips for enjoying a break with them along the North Coast 500 route, whilst staying at Ulbster Arms Hotel.

What to see near Halkirk

The whole route of the NC500 has loads of visitor attractions along the way, but we’ll focus on those within a day trip’s distance from the Ulbster Arms Hotel in Halkirk.

As north as you can go

The John O'Groats signpost.

The NC500 takes you near to the most northernmost point of the mainland UK – Dunnet Head. John O’Groats – the most northerly inhabited point – is only a short distance away too. Both of these destinations make for great photo opportunities. At John O’Groats there is the famous signpost, showing the distance to the likes of Lands End and New York. There are no such landmarks at Dunnet Head, but kids will love standing on the very northern tip of mainland UK for a fantastic photo opportunity!

Surfing in Scrabster

Got an active family? Then head out onto the crashing waves along the north coast on a surfboard to get the adrenaline pumping! Although the waters are cold, the stunning coastal views are worth it. It’s a fantastic opportunity to spend time together and see Scotland from a unique angle. For equipment hire and guidance, get in touch with North Coast Watersports

Say hello to a Highland cow

 Highland Cow in sunlight.

Highland cows are ubiquitous with Scotland, and there’s plenty of opportunity to see them. As you drive around the NC500, there’s every chance you’ll catch a good look at them in fields by the road.

To get up close and person, get in touch with Kirkton Farm who offer buggy tours of their animals, including two Highland cows. Kids will also love the horses and pygmy goats. Booking in advance is essential for this activity.

Trip to Wick

A little south-east of us is the old town of Wick. It’s a former Viking settlement with hundreds of years of fascinating history. Today, families can visit shops and cafes, as well as the Wick Heritage Centre to find out more about this gorgeous place. The drive from Wick to Ulbster Arms Hotel is a lovely one, taking you past Loch Watten. This is a great location for some trout fishing.
