Road-tripping on the NC500

The North Coast 500 grows in popularity year after year, and for good reason. This stunningly scenic circular drive takes in the northern coastline of Scotland, with all its rugged beauty and dramatic landscapes. Often shortened to NC500, it is 500 miles of sheer driving delight. Officially starting and ending in Inverness, you can join it at any point and do it in sections. There’s no right or wrong here – the important thing is enjoying yourself! Having the Ulbster Arms Hotel in Wick as a base makes sense – we are close to some of the most interesting points in the region, including the ferry to Orkney. With us, you can sleep, eat and refresh yourself before your exciting journey onwards.

Bringing your own car

If you’re bringing your own car with you, we have plenty of space for parking at the Ulbster Arms Hotel. Park your car in our private car park located to the rear of the hotel, free for all guests. Then settle in for the night. We offer a home-from-home experience, with a Highland hotel that’s designed for comfort. We’ve got a range of cosy hotel rooms, plus we have a welcoming restaurant on site. From here, you’re free to explore the wonders of the North Coast 500.

Hiring a vehicle

For those flying in from overseas, you can hire a car from the airport on arrival. All of the major airports in Scotland offer hire car services. Book in advance to guarantee availability. Our closest international airport is Inverness, which incidentally is the starting point of the NC500. Pick your car up from there and then enjoy a stunning drive up the northeast coast, arriving at the Ulbster Arms Hotel within 3 hours.

A 4×4 adventure

Alternatively, why not hire a 4×4 from our friends at Nomadic Scotland? Choosing a 4×4 Land Rover means you’re prepared for all weathers and terrains. The guys can meet you at the airport or another location of your choice, subject to availability. Or, you can pick up your vehicle from their premises in Perth. You can choose 4×4 rental only, or you can add camping equipment and various other add-ons to create an adventure package.

NC500 highlights near the Ulbster Arms

Caithness has plenty to offer those driving the NC500, and when you stay at the Ulbster Arms Hotel so many of these highlights are on your doorstep. For example, not too far away is Dunnet Head. Now don’t be fooled by John O’ Groats, because Dunnet Head is the official most northerly point on mainland Britain. This is a stunning place to stop off, as it gives views out over the North Sea, and there’s plenty of opportunity for wild bird spotting too. Here you’ll also find Dunnet Head Lighthouse, perched atop an 85m sheer cliff face. Built in 1830, although nobody lives here any more, it is still in use.

If you’re a golfer, perhaps a shot on the most northerly course designed by James Braid is in order? Reay Golf Club sits on the edge of Sandside Bay and gives you stunning panoramic views as you play. First established in 1893, the course evolved and is today a chance for golfers of all skill levels to play one of the most interesting courses in Scotland.

Another highlight nearby is Wick. This is a delightful town and royal burgh is a former Viking settlement! It was once a major fishing village, but is now a lovely place to visit and enjoy time by the sea on the harbour. It’s home to Old Pulteney Distillery. Here you can tour the distillery and see how this delicious whisky is made. It’s great for whisky lovers (just remember to have a designated driver!).

The area offers many further attractions, perfect for every type of visitor. Explore the dramatic cliffs and stunning views at Duncansby Head, or delve into history with a visit to the Castle of Mey. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the array of activities available. Relax on beautiful beaches or dive into watersports like surfing and kayaking. Golfers can enjoy scenic courses, while anglers will appreciate the excellent fishing opportunities. There’s truly something for everyone to enjoy!

Orkney Ferry from Scrabster

Our hotel also makes the perfect stop-off for those planning to take a detour from the NC500 and visit Orkney. Ferries to Orkney leave from nearby Scrabster on a regular basis, taking you straight to Stromness. Scrabster is just a 15-minute drive north from us, making us a great place to stay if you are doing a day trip to these beautiful islands. A visit to Skara Brae, the best-preserved Neolithic settlement in Western Europe and older than the Egyptian pyramids is definitely a must-do.
